October Recipe Challenge: Chocolate Chip Cookies

A new month, and a new recipe challenge for Foodtv.ca Cooking Club. For the month of October, I’m picking chocolate chip cookies, partly inspired by my meeting with Anna Olson. When I recently spoke to her on the set of her new upcoming show Fresh, she told me this chocolate chip cookie recipe is one of her most popular. So you know it’ll be good, plus who doesn’t like chocolate chip cookies?

Chocolate Chip Cookies à la Anna Olson is this month’s recipe challenge. I’ll have copies of Anna Olson’s Another Cup of Sugar cookbooks to giveaway. Be sure to get your submissions in before the end of the month.

I’m sending a copy of Tyler's Ultimate cookbooks to Chantal, Sabrina, Julia and Farah for their great write up and mouth-watering photos of last month's challenge: Tyler Florence’s Chicken Paillard with Fresh Fig Salad & Blue Cheese. I wish I had cookbooks for everyone, but don’t worry, everyone who participates in the cooking club will receive a cookbook sooner or later.

There’s no sign up for the monthly Foodtv.ca Cooking Club. You just make the recipe and email me the results before the month is up. That's when I post everyone's submissions.

Here's how the Foodtv.ca Cooking Club works:
- Make the chosen recipe:  Chocolate Chip Cookies a la Anna Olson
- Feel free to follow it to a T or add your own creative flare
- Email me (blogATfoodtvDOTca or using the contact form) a picture (in .jpg format) and a short descriptive paragraph (100-150 words) before October 31 for your chance to win prizes. (See original post for details)
- If you're a flickr member, you can also submit your picture and description to our Flickr group.

- Be sure to check out past Foodtv.ca Cooking Club Results:

  • May Cooking Club Results: Michael Smith’s Buffalo Chicken Wing Salad Part I and Part II
  • June Cooking Club Results: Laura Calder’s Crisp Chewy Meringues Part I and Part II

Should the date for Oct challenge with Anna Olsen's choc chip cookies read Oct 31 instead of Oct 1, for selection Nov 1?  Thanks

I found Anna Olsen's recipe for chocolate chip cookies last year and it is my #1 favorite of all I've ever tried.  The secret really is the cornstarch!  My family and friends can't get enough of them nor can I.  If you want a recipe that will be handed down through the generations this is truly it!!

Can't wait to try these! I borrowed Another Cupful of Sugar from my library recently and fell in love with the recipes I tried while I had it out, but I was so absorbed with the fancy recipes that I didn't bother with a classic like this... I'm searching for something that will top the almighty Tollhouse Cookies recipe! Maybe this is it.

I tried this recipe and my husband and kids ate the whole batch in no time and were looking for more.  It is a keeper!

Like Debbie, I also found this recipe a couple of years ago after watching Anna make it on her FoodTV program, Sugar.  I love it.  I have two other chocolate chip cookies that top my recipe lists as well, both are soft and chewy but one has oats.  It all depends on what kind of cookie mood I'm in.  I know we all have those ;-)

Hey Julie--

They are on the site -- if you go to the recipe search page: foodtv.ca/recipes/recipe_search.aspx -- you can pick Sugar from the show drop down list and hit search.

October 2, 2007 4:31 PM

This is simply the best chocolate chip cookie recipe that I have found.  Like Sabrina and Debbie, I too found made found this recipe on the Sugar website after watching Anna make these on her show.  They have been a hit in my family ever since.  The addition of the cornstarch keeps them soft and chewy all week long, if they last that long!!

I tried this recipe and it's awesome!!!

I'm certainly going to give this recipe a try!  I've always made the Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Cookies as well, but I'm certainly eager to try something different.  The addition of cornstarch seems to be the trick.

Rita: aww, that sucks.  I assume you've tried carob and that sort of thing?

Hrm, maybe you could use the dough base but put something really fun in the cookies instead. Like... bits of pralines.  Or cinnamon chips (I have seen them before in stores, just not recently).

Actually, I just made chocolate chip cookies myself a week ago, from a friend's recipe. Maybe I'LL substitute something else for chocolate chips when I bake up a batch of Anna Olsen's recipe for this challenge!

October 4, 2007 4:46 AM

Well I was surfing last night and came across Anna's cookie recipe. I could not wait until my next day off to try it out.

I excitedly got all the ingredients together and away we went. I just had to taste the dough and it was so good it's amazing I ended up with any cookies at all!!!!

With my dog Zoe at my feet anxiously awaiting a morsel to fall to the floor we continued on. These cookies are FANTASTIC!!!!! and will  add to my favorites. Thank you Anna for all your great recipe's keep up the good work and will look forward to your new show, Sincerely Rosanne and Zoe

My grandson was not feeling well so I thought I'd make these cookies and added 1 cup natural peanut butter to the dough, as peanut butter is his favorite.  I didn't have any

any bittersweet chocolate in the house so I add 1 cup of jumbo semisweet chips.  Everyone enjoy and said they were great especially when they were still warm. I thought I wouldn't have any left to give to my neighours as they were

eating 2 at a time. Thanks for another KEEPER!!!!!!!!!

October 4, 2007 6:18 PM

These cookies are totally awesome, my family just love them. I added toasted hazelnuts just for added flavor and crunch. YUMMY!!

October 5, 2007 8:44 AM

WOW, READING THESE POSTS MADE MY MOUTH WATER!

I, AM CERTAINLY GOING TO TRY THIS RECIPE,IT IS JUST WHAT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR.

October 5, 2007 11:38 AM

We love this recipe! We use Bernard Callebout chocolate when we can and it makes the cookies even more decadent and ymmy!

Vivian said:

I made these last night and were surprised at how thick the batter was making the cookies rather huge, during the baking process, it plumped up making the cookies quite thick.  Considering it was such a thick cookie, it did cook up in the 10 minute requirement.  I thought it would be doughy and not enough cooking time but the cookie was rather light and very delicious. I used Lindt milk chocolate with hazelnuts as that was the only chocolate I had at home.

I can't wait to try this recipe.  I always loved Sugar and have had great success with Anna's recipes.  My aunt has a sugar cookie recipe that uses corn starch in it, and they are just the perfect amount of soft in the middle every time.  So with the success of that recipe in mind, I'm going to try this one since chocolate chip cookies are my absolute favourite.  They'd probably be really good with butterscotch chip, too.

October 21, 2007 5:25 PM

This recipe is a total gem!  I love everything about these cookies - they are chewy, buttery and rich (but not too rich!)  I have tried a TON of different chocolate chip cookie recipes and this one is by far the best!

How long have I been looking for the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe? A long time!  Chocolate chip cookies are one of the first things I remember baking as a child (with mom's supervision of course).  I am so happy to have found this recipe.  It is absolutely delicious and the best I've found.  Just try not to eat them all off the cookie try that's just come out of the oven.  Amazing.  Try it and see.
