Question of the Week: Do You Plate Your Take-Out or Eat Right Out of the Container?

My husband is the kind of guy who is offended by anything other than eating food off a plate, sitting down at a table and using up every possible mealtime utensil there is. Even with pizza!

I like doing things right myself, but when it comes to take-out, there’s a reason for why you order it.  I might as well cook if I’m going to plate my Pad Thai and wonton soup, having to wash a couple of full place settings when all’s said and done. Where’s the convenience in that?

On the other hand, I kind of see his point; mealtime is nothing if not ritualistic, and there’s something to be said for taking pride in the things we eat by honouring them with proper tableware, regardless of whether they come from your local organic farmer or corner noodle house.  (Now that I have a child, I’m finding things like having ‘proper dinner’ are becoming more and more important, if only to try and socialize her not to embarrass me when other people are around…)

And then there's the question of conservation. Am I saving water by not having to wash up after dinner?  Or do the (mostly non-biodegradable) take-out containers negate that benefit? Dinner for two may not actually weigh in, but when it's a bag of takeout waste vs. several dishwasher loads after a party of eight, there may be something there to consider.

But seriously, am I lazy? Or is he crazy?

my thoughts are that takeout is takeout. it's not something you should be getting that often if you're concerned about the environment (or your health, really) because you are right. it creates a whole bunch of excess, unnecessary waste.

that said, if you occasionally need that convenience, i'd say to just eat out of the containers since they're going to have to be thrown out anyway. it's not an either or situation. it would be bag of takeout waste PLUS several dishwasher loads... unless you can find a takeout place that will let you provide your own tupperware containers.  that would be awesome.

i think that water used to wash dishes is less bad than garbage going into a landfill.

I eat my take-out out of the container... providing I can heat it up in same container.  Otherwise, I plate it to heat it up.  My husband always plates his take out food regardless of if he can reheat it in same container.  I wish he would do as I do because it would save on me washing more dishes.

IF I am going to have take out -- and it rarely happens, I plate it.  I don't want to remind myself that I paid someone else to prepare my meal.

We plate Chinese, since it's all family style, and usually we'll grab a plate for pizza even if we don't use it. Swiss Chalet and fast food though... no way! Why make extra dishes?

I didn't think I had a preference until reading the above, but I guess my family always sat down and pulled out the dishes. From pizza to Chinese, KFC to Greek; I guess it just made the meal feel more like our traditional style. Mind you, we only ever had take out a few times a year so this made have added to the usage of plates. I think the only take out meals eaten right from the bag are ones from burger joints or donair stands after a late night.

okay...at home, we even plate McD's...It makes it feel like more of a real meal.  I do enough takeout without plates at lunches downtown, where there's not really an option.

There is one thing to consider if you are eating out of the containers - the rice at Chinese restaurants comes in styrofoam containers that leach a chemical into your food if it is hot. And the steamed rice is quite hot. I ask them to put it into one of the foil containers they put the food in. And I always put it in bowls to serve as those containers are flimsy and it ends up on my carpet. Also if the pizza place doesn't put some waxed paper or something on the pizza box before putting the pizza in the box you are getting dioxins in your pizza. Just something to think about!!

I always plate any takeout.  Why not give the takeout as much respect as it deserves and make it more appealing and appetizing to those that eat so that theyit will appreciate it has cost an amount beyond your food budget for any period any question. It has saved the homemaker big time in energy and time commitment and is possibly more upscale than an every day food serving.

It depends on what it is... Fish and chips I will eat right out of the takeout box, but if I have something that requires cutting (steak) or jabbing something with a fork (pasta), then I will stick it on a plate instead of making a huge mess.

From reading the article and then the comments, I feel as though I'm grievously endangering both myself and the planet by eating takeout!!

Maybe I should bring in my own plates and cups to be on the safe and ecologically friendly side.

I started to do that with Tim's, and then realized their coffee tastes better in the throw away cups than in fine china.

Go figure...
