Question of the Week: Foods You Avoid Due to Weird Texture?

I was initially stumped by this question because I honestly couldn’t think of any food I avoid because of its texture. I usually scrape the top of my mouth eating toast, which is unpleasant, but that doesn’t stop me from eating it.

Then I remembered eating boiled cow’s tongue once and how I’ve never felt the urge to try it again. I think it was the texture of boiled tongue that put me off because I quite enjoyed the roasted pig's tongue prepared by Martin Picard.

But a casual survey of colleagues revealed these weird food texture confessions: Christine can’t stand the jelly-like layer that floats on fruit flans/custards –“I have to scrape it off or just not eat the dessert;” Nadine hates the texture of tofu especially in soups and such –"It’s gross, all spongy and squishy and it tastes like you’re eating one of your old kitchen sponges!” And Jessica finds the texture of jello downright slimy.

How about you? What foods do you avoid because of their weird texture? Please post them below.

Oh this is a good question....

I would have to say Sea Urchin.  Honestly, when it is fresh it is really beautiful in flavor but the texture is something I can not seem to get over.

Another... Oysters.  I looooove seafood and I loooove teeny tiny Olympia Oysters but only when they are smoked.  Raw oysters make me gag... it's the slime.  And Fried style are just too big a mouthful... it's just too much going on in my mouth in not so good a way.

Roma Tomatoes.  I loooove tomatoes, but for some reason Roma's have a mealier texture over others.  Also, as they get riper the mealy texture can worsen and they will get drier.  Plus they have a weird fishy taste to me... well the mealy ones do anyway.  I will go with an heirloom or a hot house tomato over romas everytime.

SPAM.... it feels like gristle and fat.  My Dad used to say that it was made from the Lips & A-holes of whatever animals they used to make it.  It's tastes like that could very well be the recipe.  UCK!

I can't stand Okra, it's too slimy. Because it's a big part of BF's cultural cuisine (Caribbean) I eat it when its served, but I'm secretly gagging on the inside.

There's not many things that I won't eat, but congee is another. Things that are slimy, I have a hard time with. Ironically, seafood (oysters included) doesn't bother me at all.

June 9, 2008 1:04 PM

I cannot put jellyfish in my mouth. No matter how hard I try and how hard some Chinese colleagues try to convince me of it's worth, it makes me yak.

Porridge--it has that porridgy feeling.  This encompasses ALL the hot cereals like Cream of Wheat (guh!), Red River cereal; any other that you care to name will not be on my spoon.  Oddly enough, I adore risotto which apparently has a similar texture to porridge.

Bananas--that's not so much a texture thing as a smell thing.  No, you're right, it's a texture thing.

Custard--it moves in that particular way that just seems menacing.  Mousse is just on the edge of okay but it might move menacingly too.

Large peas--small peas are fine but those large peas? ick.  I think there are still some left on my plate from when I was 8 and I was supposed to eat them before I went to bed.

Brown lentils--they are oddly drying in my mouth.  Red lentils are fine but those flat brown lentils are just icky.

Bubble tea!! That's just horrifying! Small, gelatinous blobs of tapioca (that's a whole 'nother rant!) pop into your mouth.  I bet they move menacingly too.

Gum.  Do I really need to say anything about this most disgusting thing?

Mozza balls in soup are too squishy.  And bubble tea, I forgot about that one until someone above mentioned it.  You're right, it's way too mucus-like.  And cold smoked salmon.  I love the jerky stuff, and I don't mind a thin slick on a thick cracker with cream cheese, but when you get piles of salmon on a plate at a fancy restaurant, it's just too much gross.

June 9, 2008 11:04 PM

I'm not too bad with most things, but thanks for the bubble tea tip, not even going to attempt to go there. I've got a big problem with fresh mushrooms raw, and then again in anything unless they have been fried. They look like slugs, and I am petrified of slugs, so why would I eat something that looks like them. I also have a problem with the feeler looking calamari. I love the rings, chewy little tire tubes, but the tentacle ones, yah, not gonna eat them. And tounge. Can't eat anything that might taste me back!

June 10, 2008 11:53 AM

Freshly-squeezed orange juice is acceptable only when passed through a strainer.

Juice marketers who have landed on "extra pulp" as a selling strategy are vile. They should all find themselves with pulp lodged between their teeth, slimily coating the roofs of their mouths or congealed in lumps that pass slowly and retch-inducing-ly down the backs of their throats. Then they would know. O yes. Then they would know....

Let's not get started on that stringy, phlegmy mess that constitutes the bulk of the orange itself. This is why juicers and strainers were invented: to ELIMINATE  THE PULP. We don't put it back in!

Thank you.

Pears!  No matter how ripe they are they're still gritty.  It's like eating a mouthful of mud.  I absolutely can't stand them, which is unfortunate because I love the flavour.

I also avoid oysters and clams because I find them to be too chewy.  I was told that the oysters were chewy because they weren't done right so I tried them again fresh in PEI.  Everyone else said that these oysters were the best, and freshest they'd ever had, but I still thought it was like eating garlic rubber, haha!

Thanks to an extra-ordinarily restrictive diet in my first few years of life, I can no longer tolerate cottage cheese, skim milk (coloured water), powdered milk (why?) or bananas (even the smell will set off the nausea trigger).  I don't see what the big deal is regarding tongue; if you scrape the outer layer off and put enough salt on it, it tastes just fine.

Due to another medical problem, I also had to eat liver on a regular basis, though to this day I am fearful of trying calve's liver; my mother's version could sole a shoe.  I ate chicken livers with cooked onions every week, topped with enough ketchup so you really couldn't notice the flavour.  Thankyou Mr. Heinz!  I'd still eat them.

I cannot tolerate clams or oysters; slimy erasers are what they remind me of, though I have never eaten those so I don't know why I have that comparison in mind.

I ate cream of mushroom soup as often as possible for the first seven years of my life and then my stomach just wouldn't tolerate mushrooms anymore.  To this day, I can't do it.  I get that strange porous texture in my mouth and I know what will come next.  Eggplant is the same.

Rice pudding and tapioca are like maggots in a bowl.

I love my scrambled eggs, but cannot eat them any other way; the runniness turns my stomach and hard boiled or soft-boiled just doesn't cut it; there's something about the smell.

In spite of what I've written, I am truly not a fussy eater; I have allergies but was taught to eat what was put in front of me unless it would actually make me sick.  I'm very willing to try new things, and go back and try things I've hated all my life to see if my tastebuds have matured.

Alas, most often, things remain the same.

Red wine is a migraine in a glass, as well.

I absolutely concur with Nicole about the Ambrosia "junk" too :)  Yuck - marshmallows are barely tolerable in hot chocolate; but mixed with sour cream?  Ugh - who came up with that?

Tapioca pudding - reminds me of fish eggs.  Barley, reminds me of maggots - not that I've ever eaten maggots.  As far as meat goes - that would have to be ham, or bologna.  I have a hard time even touching either one.

Anything "pasty" and without tasty flavour like lima beans, tea biscuits, dry, plain mashed potatoes, overcooked canned peas..... ugh! 'Foodie' and I agree on this one I think. On the other hand, that same texture with flavour like peanut butter or chile con carne is great.

How about hearts of palm?? Not only are they strangely layered and undecided between slimy and mushy, but they also taste pretty disgusting to me.

And really fatty and eggy sauces like hollandaise...Way too silky, you know there's something behind that smoothness...

Another thing: thousand-year eggs, a chines "delicacy" that chemically transforms whole, shelled eggs into a deep purple see-through jello look-alike... used to be made with mare urine, or so i've heard...

I can't stand anything that's been ground, like hamburger.  Not fond of cottage cheese or liver either.

Okra.  Hands-down.  Have you seen the original "Invasion of The Body Snatchers"?   I'm sure the creatures in that film were inspired by disgusting, slimy okra.  As a kid I'd cringe as my other ate them.  Even now I shuddered just thinking about them.

Beef Stroganoff.  The idea of ruining perfectly good stew with sour cream grosses me out.  My family loves when I make it but it reminds me of the taste of vomit.

I love calimari but hate squid soup.  There are few things that need a blind fold to eat but this is one of them.

Sloppy cereals (e.g. porridge).

The stringy bits in eggs make me gag if I detect one in my mouth.  I will crack the eggs, then fork out the "egg-strings" before I beat the eggs to make an omelet.

Pudding-y desserts. Custard I can stand okay if it's on something of another texture such as cake.

I probably would hate bubble tea, and I don't want to even try it to confirm!

So far I haven't met a texture I don't like (except jube jubes and other similar gummy candies, but those hardly count as food) and I've eaten many "gross" things.

As for tastes I just can't stand:

Bananas... I can eat banana bread or other things with bananas, but to eat a whole banana on it's own is just terrible. I don't even mind the texture, there's just something about whole bananas.. I've even tried a frozen chocolate covered one. Still terrible.

Raw tomatoes. Much like bananas, I just don't like the "on it's own" form. Tomatoes in other things are pretty good. But I just can't eat a lone tomato.

Celery. Why is celery so bad? It looks like it should be fantastic, all crunchy and juicy and green... Why celery? Why most you taste the way you do?

Cilantro. You just disgust me cilantro.
