Book Review: Fresh with Anna Olson

by Catherine Jheon Tuesday, November 03, 2009 1:29 PM

Anna Olson’s latest cookbook is shiny and purdy, kind of like Anna herself. I’ve mentioned this before but the girl is even prettier in person. In line with her mantra “eat fresh, eat local,” Fresh with Anna Olson: Seasonally Inspired Recipes to Share with Family and Friends is full of seasonal recipes from her Food Network Canada show of the same name.

The book is conveniently divided into seasons with equal attention given to all the chapters even winter.

From chorizo cheese potato wrap (winter) to miso grilled eggplants and scallops (fall) to fiddlehead salad with pickled red onions and maple toasted pecans (spring) to corn blueberry toss (summer), she lists ingredients that are in season at the beginning of each chapter then offers up recipes using those seasonal ingredients.

Since I can’t always remember what’s in season when, I found this very helpful.

There’s a nice range of recipes as well. Whether it’s fancy shamancy osso bucco with gremolata or an easy lemon hummus with pita, you’re bound to find inspiration from the over 100 recipes offered.

And yes, the book is peppered with gorgeous pictures (food porn alert!), fun personal anecdotes and plenty of tips in Anna’s warm, gal-next-door manner. This is a lovely book kind of like Anna herself.

This month, you can win a copy of Fresh with Anna Olson: Seasonally Inspired Recipes to Share with Family and Friends (Whitecap Books) by signing up for Food Network Canada's Newsletter for the latest programming information, fabulous contests and fascinating content delivered right to your inbox!

Bazaar's Book posts are featured Tuesdays.

I would like to know why after completing the newsletter registration and pressing submit, your form goes back to the Terms box which I agree to then it tells me that the registration is incomplete and to return to the previous page.  As a result I cannot register or enter the contest.

Thanks

This is the second time that I have visited your cozy little restaurant at the vineyards.  Lunch was a huge success and the dessert to die for.  What charm it has.  Thank you.

I recently visited the vineyard where Anna's restaurant is located.  I loved it, bought a copy of "Sugar"  and learned that I had just missed Anna!  My friend who lives in the are agreed to return and get Anna to sign it.  She mailed it to me and now I have been busy baking!  Thank you Anna for the wonderful recipes.  I used to have a favorite Chocolate Chip cookie recipe, but now it's yours!
